🍔 Authentic Oklahoma-Style Onion Burger Recipe

Straight from the Sooner State and warehouse-tested.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 4 burger buns

  • Salt & pepper

  • 4 slices of American cheese (or cheddar if you're fancy)

  • Butter or oil for grilling

  • Pickles, mustard, and mayo (optional but highly encouraged)

Instructions:

  1. Form the ground beef into 4 loose balls. Do not overwork the meat.

  2. Heat a skillet or griddle to medium-high. Add a little butter or oil.

  3. Place the beef balls on the hot surface, immediately pile a generous amount of thinly sliced onions on top, and smash them flat with a spatula.

  4. Cook until edges are crispy and onions are caramelized, flipping once and pressing slightly. Add cheese after flipping.

  5. Toast buns, assemble, and serve with pickles, mustard, or your sauce of choice.

Wine Pairing:
Pair with a Zinfandel or a bold Syrah—the smoky char and sweet onions love a deep, fruit-forward red. Our fave for the office BBQ was a California Zin with a peppery finish and a bold attitude.
