š Authentic Oklahoma-Style Onion Burger Recipe
Straight from the Sooner State and warehouse-tested.
Ingredients:
-
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
-
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
-
4 burger buns
-
Salt & pepper
-
4 slices of American cheese (or cheddar if you're fancy)
-
Butter or oil for grilling
-
Pickles, mustard, and mayo (optional but highly encouraged)
Instructions:
-
Form the ground beef into 4 loose balls. Do not overwork the meat.
-
Heat a skillet or griddle to medium-high. Add a little butter or oil.
-
Place the beef balls on the hot surface, immediately pile a generous amount of thinly sliced onions on top, and smash them flat with a spatula.
-
Cook until edges are crispy and onions are caramelized, flipping once and pressing slightly. Add cheese after flipping.
-
Toast buns, assemble, and serve with pickles, mustard, or your sauce of choice.
Wine Pairing:
Pair with a Zinfandel or a bold Syrahāthe smoky char and sweet onions love a deep, fruit-forward red. Our fave for the office BBQ was a California Zin with a peppery finish and a bold attitude.
