National Amaretto Day … Fun Facts. 4/19
Amaretto is an Italian almond flavored liqueur, from Saronno, Italy. Originated back in the 16th century. It is a sweetened distilled spirit from steeped almonds, apricot pits, peach stones, or a combination of all three. The Disaronno brand is probably the most popular world wide, gaining worldwide recognition in the 20th century.
Amaretto comes from the Italian word “amaro” meaning bitter. Hence the bitter taste of apricot kernels or almonds used in production.
In the 1960’s Amaretto Sour cocktail (see recipe in our recipe section), made its debut in the US and put Amaretto on the map.
